Edmonton Tooth Extractions and Wisdom Teeth

When a tooth has to go, we make it easy on you

A tooth that can’t be saved, or wisdom teeth acting up

Does the tooth really have to come out?

Not always, and we’ll say so. We check first whether a filling, a crown, or root canal therapy can save it. Removal wins when:

  • NDecay or a fracture runs below the gumline: not enough solid tooth is left for a crown to grip.
  • NAn infection won't clear: the canals can't be sealed, or a previous root canal has failed.
  • NGum disease has loosened the tooth: the bone around it has broken down.
  • NA wisdom tooth is impacted or only partly through: it's pushing into the molar in front, or a gum flap keeps trapping bacteria. One that came in straight can stay, checked at your regular cleanings

Simple or surgical: which one you’ll need

  • NSimple extraction: the tooth is fully visible with straightforward roots; we loosen it and lift it out, often in minutes. You'll know which you need from your digital X-rays.
  • NSurgical extraction: the tooth has broken at the gumline, has curved roots, or hasn't erupted. We open the gum, sometimes section the tooth, and place a few stitches; most impacted wisdom teeth fall here.
If anything feels sharp, raise a hand and we add more freezing.

Recovery, day by day

Most people are back at work in two to three days after a simple extraction, three to five after wisdom teeth.
  • NDay 1: bite on gauze, take pain relief before the freezing wears off, ice, and eat cool, soft foods. No straws, spitting, smoking, or hard rinsing.
  • NDays 2 and 3: swelling peaks, then fades. Start gentle warm salt-water rinses.
  • NThe first two weeks: pain eases daily, medication usually stops by day five, and the gum closes by day 14.
  • NCall us if pain climbs instead of falling: a throbbing ache three to five days out can mean dry socket, which a medicated dressing usually settles.

Sedation and comfort during your extraction

Freezing, a private room, and your picks from the comfort menu (weighted blanket, noise-cancelling headphones, Netflix, custom music channel, aromatherapy) are enough for most people. If you’re anxious, or having several teeth out, tell us when you book.

Replacing the tooth afterward

Neighbouring teeth tilt into an empty space and the bone shrinks within the first year, so for any tooth other than a wisdom tooth, we plan the replacement before the extraction.

Your Questions Answered

How much do Edmonton tooth extractions cost?

A simple extraction costs less than a surgical one; X-rays or a bone graft are billed separately, and you’ll get a written estimate first. We accept cash, credit cards, and most dental insurance plans, but not ADSC or AISH.

Am I a good candidate for an extraction?

Most healthy teens and adults. Blood thinners, osteoporosis medications, diabetes, or a heart condition change how we plan, not whether we can.

How long does the appointment take?

About 20 to 40 minutes for a simple extraction and 45 to 90 for several wisdom teeth.

Does dental insurance cover extractions?

Most plans cover a percentage of the fee; surgical and wisdom tooth coverage varies more. Send us your plan details and we’ll check.
