If it’s been years since your last dental visit
Maybe it started with one bad appointment as a kid, and every year since has made the next call harder. Now a tooth hurts, and explaining the gap feels worse than the pain. Nobody here will ask why it took so long.
IV sedation dentistry delivers a sedative through a small line in a vein, so you rest in a deeply relaxed, twilight state while we complete your treatment. At Smile Haven Family Dental, your Edmonton sedation dentist in Edgemont, years of postponed work can often be finished in one or two calm visits. Book online or call (780) 868-7777.
What does IV sedation feel like?
IV sedation feels like drifting at the edge of sleep: relaxed, able to respond if we speak to you, and breathing on your own throughout.
- Drowsy, not unconscious: a heavy, floating calm rather than being “put under.”
- Little or no memory: the medication has an amnesic effect, so the visit feels like it lasted minutes.
- Adjustable in real time: with the line in place, we can deepen or lighten the sedation as needed.
How it compares to nitrous oxide and oral sedation
- NNitrous oxide (laughing gas): mild, breathed through a nose mask, gone within minutes.
- NOral sedation: a pill taken beforehand; deeper than nitrous but slow to start and hard to adjust.
- NIV sedation: the deepest option short of general anesthetic, working within minutes and fine-tuned throughout.
Who is a candidate for IV sedation?
IV sedation suits healthy adults for whom a standard appointment is hard to get through:
- NSevere dental anxiety: the kind that has kept you away for years.
- NA strong gag reflex: even X-rays set it off.
- NLong or multiple procedures: several fillings, extractions, or implant work in one visit.
- NTrouble getting numb: freezing hasn't worked well for you before.
Safety and monitoring
- NBefore: a review of your medical history, medications, allergies, and past reactions to anesthesia.
- NDuring: heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels tracked for the entire appointment.
- NAfter: you rest in your private room until you're steady enough to leave with your driver.
